Paxil (paroxetine) is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It works by restoring the balance of serotonin which helps to improve certain mood problems. Paxil has not been outlawed in any US state and is still prescribed today. It is also sold under the names Paxil CR, Cereva, Pexeva, Seroxat, Parotin, Aropax, Xetanor, ParoMerck, and Rexetin, Paroxetine HCl.
It is the fifth prescribed anti-depressant and had approximately 20 million active prescriptions.
What your doctor may be confused by is that, in mid-2007, the US FDA placed a warning on prescribing the drug Paxil (and its variants) to minors and pregnant women. Also shortly after it was first introduced, Paxil-CR (controlled release) was very hard to get which cause a lot of "urban legends" gain credibility. It was found that certain manufacturing facilities were not using a proper bonding agent and the CR portion of the pills was not functioning properly. That was years ago and has long been corrected.
When you say that the doctors "took him off the medication", I seriously hope you mean that they slowly weaned him off Paxil over several weeks/months and, if he does suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, or depression, they prescribed him another medication.
Stopping Paxil cold turkey (especially at doses 20MG or above) can be extremely painful and confusing for a patient. Paxil regulates serotonin for those whose bady may have difficulty with doing it on their own. Stopping this medication cold turkey WILL cause severe headaches (aka "brain zaps" to those who have experienced them), hi/low (mimicking bi-polar) behavior, and depression. Suicidal tendencies (the condition, not that band) are also know to occur during cold turkey withdrawal.
PLEASE. Do not take this lightly. If your doctor pulled you off Paxil completely/instantly, go to a doctor who specializes (or at least has some general conception) of how these drugs work.
Paxil is not the perfect solution for everyone, and it does have side effects..but it does work. I have seen people make a complete 180 and get their life back after only 2 or 3 weeks on the medication.
Remember our bodies are a delicate chemical balance. When that balance gets thrown off, our bodies and behaviors change (drink a few glasses of wine and see for yourself).
Finding the correct prescription and dose of medication to assist with serotonin production is not always simple- some patients need to try one or two different drugs first. Paxil seems to have the highest successful initial rate but it also has the most amount of side effects.
How long was you on the drug? SSRi's like Paxil are not the same as a valium or xanax. you can't take a Paxil and expect to "feel' results in 10 minutes. It can take 2 weeks to a month to successfully help manage your body- and it can take up to a year of not taking it for some of the side effects to completely subside.
Don't let you stop cold turkey!! Trust me. 
Also do some searching around and you will find that many people (and I have first hand experience) have been able to slowly reduce their Paxil intake (under doctor supervision) by supplementing their bodies with certain vitamins. Again your mileage may vary, but these have helped many: St Johns Wort, Sam-e, DMEA, 5-http, biotin, and magnesium. These are NOT a substitute for proper medication (are you listening Tom Cruise?) bu they have reduced some need for medication as well as side effects in many.

I. How Teenagers Feel

I can't get out of depression. It's always off and on, which makes it worse because I feel so good when I'm happy and that just goes away...
And cutting... it's escalating a lot. I just need help... I don't know how to stop or if I even want to.

I don't have any friends, so I don't have anyone to talk to. I'm not very comfortable talking verbally-- but I'm okay with typing to people over the internet which is why I'm asking here.
I don't get much exercise. I pace a lot, if that counts for anything. =| I do not consume any meat or dairy products... so my diet could be the cause, which I've never thought of. But compared to what a lot of people eat everyday... I don't see why they wouldn't have the same problem as I.
And about seeing a psychiatrist - does that honestly help at all? I don't want to tell anyone about my problem (anyone I know personally) if that isn't going to help.
And I do not want to take any kind of medication.

Why are you being so harsh? My goal isn't for attention and I'm not proud of what I am doing. Please do not accuse me of things when you do not know everything that is going on.

I do not have a school guidance counselor. I go to an alternative school. There are only about 30 kids and they are all older than me. I quit regular high school because I just wasn't making any friends and I didn't like all the useless drama-- and the teacher that called my mother was at my old school. At my current school, the teachers are very concerned about me and keep pulling me aside to talk to me but they're going about it in all the wrong ways. It makes me uncomfortable.
And I do not believe in God, so no help there.

II. What People Them Advise

What I've done to stop cutting is to rely on one of my best friends. She too used to cut her self to help with the emotional pain of life, but, we have promissed eachother not to do it. And if we feel like we want to we know we can call the other any time anywhere. We have developed our own support system. And it works great. If you do not have anyone that close, you should try a councelor. Good luck.Also - another huge things that has helped me is my Religion. I'm a Christian and when ever I get that down, I pray and ask God to send the holy spirit to calm me. This too works for me...

Hey, i am 14 and ive been cutting since i was 10. I used to get really down and stuff coz of other problems, and nothing ever seemed to help. I heard of people cutting and tried it out, it felt like everything was actually seeping out of me. Which is psychological, as thats impossible. What people don't understand is that this is not suicide related, nor is it attention seeking - people who do that are idiots. You are just trying to find a way to be happy again, which is perfectly plausible, every body has their way. But it isn't right. Talk to your teacher, thats what I did, and everything worked out better. Your parents will have to be contacted, but i promise that they won't be angry, just shocked and hurt, and immediately think it's their fault. Really think about what's bothering you.

I am saddened to read your questions and your additional information. My daughter was in the same situation as you when she was a teenager. My suggestion to you is to seek some outside counseling. If you do not wish to speak to your family or people that you know, which is the same thing she was feeling, go speak to a counselor. You are not alone in the way that you feel and the outlook is not as devastating as you may think. The great thing about talking with a 3rd party counselor is that you are talking with someone that you do not know, does not know your family. My daughter found this to be very helpful and she is doing really well now. She has stopped cutting and has graduated college and has her first career job now. I am very proud of her and she is very happy. So please, at least talk with some 3 rd party therapist, counselor, etc.
